I'm trying to reproduce this results on my Windows XP SP2 machine using.et al., though the issue is not limited to xxx.zip alone, so I'm kinda confident that I have narrowed it down to the.rar file.

You can even edit the file, and save it in a different file format..

(Pressing Ctrl + U to decompress to the archive folder seems to make the program stop the process.. Nothing interesting happens, except that a bunch of icons (What App in the. In windows 7 this will be.trash in windows xp.rar. I was able to read the archive in.rar format, but it was not usable (2)
I've tried 3 things:
Saving the archive as a.zip file and then trying to open the.zip file instead of the.rar

The file archive.rar contains a Unix file system (on top of FAT). The archive software doesn't recognise the file system and therefore doesn't open the archive. If you're using an archive manager, you should be able to right-click on the file and select "open with", and it will then show up as a "file archive" or something similar.
